Friends in Haiti

We all can't wait to get back to Haiti to get to work! Here's a picture of all of us in Port-au-Prince with some of our friends who worked with us. In this picture are Hermby and Roseline. Can't wait to see them again.

How we got started...

It's an ironic story how we all got together as a team to work in Haiti. I, Katarina, had gone to Haiti to volunteer at an orphanage in Cap-Haitien (northern Haiti) during my spring break from classes at West Virginia University. My original plans, however, were changed when the person I was supposed to be helping had to travel back to the United States immediately. I was placed in the care of Gerome, the on-site mechanic and helper at the orphanage, but there was no real plans for me when I first arrived. It was when Gerome informed me that three other people from California were arriving in Cap-Haitien only a few hours after I had that I began to feel a little better about the entire situation.
Gerome and I met Roland, Rochelle, and Audra at the bus station an hour later, and we all became friends within the next few minutes! They, too, had planned on living and working out of the same orphanage that I was at for the same week I was there.
By the end of the week together we had accomplished all of our goals in service and benevolence, had grown together as a group, had found new friends in each other, and had nutured the same desire to help people and Haiti.
It was because of this strong friendship and like Christian faith, that we decided to stay in contact with each other once we returned to the States.
In the past two weeks since we got to our respective homes in West Virginia and California a lot has happened. We have all made presentations at the different churches that sponsered us, we have made posters and photo albums of what we did while we were in Haiti, we have talked to organizations and schools... we have worked hard at keeping in touch, as well. All four of us have very busy schedules...we've found Skype and texting, and calling, and gmail chatting...anything to try and keep in touch. The Churches of Christ in our areas continue to be interested and involved in our work. And we are willing to try and spread our stories and effort to anyone who will listen!
Currently, Roland has moved back to Haiti for a year with his family. He was born near Cap-Haitien and adopted at the age of eight. Although he has always made trips to visit, check on, and help his family in Haiti, this is the first time he has moved back.
Rochelle and Audra plan to go back to Haiti for some time towards the end of the summer, and I just bought plane tickets to travel back to Haiti in a few days. I will hopefully be able to stay for a month.
It is our intention to use this blog as a way for our families, friends, and supporters to stay up on what we are doing each day...to see pictures and here stories about our work and how we are doing. All I ask is that people check in and read of our daily journys and tell others about us, as well. Its our dream that people all over the United States can help us help Haiti and become educated on what is happening outside of our secure world here in America. Hopefully this blog will aid that!
